Durante una intervista al Washinton Post, il presidente e CEO di Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, ha dichiarato che PlayStation 5 sarà compatibile al 99% della libreria di titoli disponibili per PlayStation 4. Inoltre i sottoscriventi al servizio ad abbonamento PlayStation Plus potranno utilizzare la funzionalità di retro-compatibilità fin dal giorno del lancio, grazie al PlayStation Plus Collection, che include l'accesso sulla nuova console di ben 18 titoli che hanno segnato la vita della precedente generazione di console:
